Arranger Of The Void: Meet Pantha Du Prince
Hendrik Weber, better known as Pantha du Prince, is a German composer and musician who thinks of music as energy, uses sound as a raw material and sees the whole world as his instrument. He samples unusual objects and layers different components like branches breaking and dogs barking in his soundscapes.
For Weber, technology and nature are part of the same cycle where one is simply a continuation of the other. His music reflects this philosophy, blending techno with percussion instruments and found sounds. He also utilizes contact microphones, bringing the environments and objects that surround us, like desks and fan heaters, to musical life.
In the video he talks about his project, The Bell Laboratory, which started as an exploration of the cityscape of Oslo via its ringing bells, and has evolved into a mobile carillon that can be tuned with electronic equipment and used as a basis to jam with other members of the collective. This creates “unstable moments” that are combined with other experimental sounds for live performances.
